Histological Effects of Cadmium on Hepatopancreas and Gill in Cyprinus carpio
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Histological studies in organs like hepatopancreas and gill of the freshwater fish, Cyprinus carpio, were made to assess tissue damage due to sub-lethal concentration of cadmium after a long exposure period. Methods: This study was conducted in University of Tehran, in 2013. The fish were divided into two groups in 1000 litre fiberglass tanks supplied with dechlorinated water [hardness 302.6 mg CaCo3/l, pH 7, O2 7.8 mg/L and temperature 15 ± 2 ºC] and continuous aeration. Group 1 was without any cadmium considered as control group. Group 2 was exposed to 30 ppb CdCl2 (Merck) containing 7.8 ppb cadmium. The tissue samples from: hepatopancreas, gill were collected 30 days post exposure and processed by histological procedures. Results: The main lesions in cadmium exposed groups were: (a) pancreatitis necrosis in endocrine part of pancreas (b) cholangitis and necrosis in liver parenchyma (c) hypertrophy, fusion and telangiectasia in secondary lamellae Conclusion: Cadmium chloride at low concentration can induce pathological alterations in hepatopancreas and gill of common carp.

Histopathological response of hepatopancreas and gill in Metopograpsus messor crab exposed to cadmium pollutants
In recent years, monitoring the amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems by quantity measures in water, sediment and fish tissue has shifted to the quality measures of pollutant effects on aquatic animals and assessment of aquatic animal health and, ultimately, the ecosystem. This research performed on three replicates has examined the histopathological response of hepatopancreas and gill in ...
full textEffects of water-borne cadmium on the skin of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio).
The skin of carp, Cyprinus carpio, was studied at the ultrastructural level after exposure of the fish to low and high concentrations of cadmium in the water (22 and 560 micrograms/L, respectively) for different periods. The effects of the low concentration of cadmium were similar to those of the high concentration, although they appeared later. The basal lamina and the skin surface became high...
full textEffects of cadmium and copper on sialic acid levels in blood and brain tissues of Cyprinus carpio L
Sialic acids (N-acetylneuraminic acids) are negatively charged monosaccharides which are common constituents in oligosaccharides of vertebrates and some invertebrate species[1]. They are possibly the most biologically important monosaccharide units of glycoconjugates. The majority of sialic acid in higher animals is bound up in glycoconjugates. Sialic acid often occurs as the terminal monosacch...
full textHistopathological effects of acute copper sulphate exposure on kidney, liver and gill of common carp, Cyprinus carpio, fingerlings
In the present study histological effects of copper sulphate on, 180 common carp, Cyprinus carpio, fingerlings were studied. In this regard, fish of treatment groups were exposed to 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 ppm of copper sulphate during 4 days. Behaviours and clinical signs of fish were recorded during the experiment, and samples were done from kidney, liver and gill of moribund and fresh dead fish, a...
full textEffect of herbicides on fish and histological evaluation of common carp (Cyprinus carpio)
Toxicity of the herbicides like 2, 4-D NA salt, glyphosate and paraquat were tested, fish was investigated in laboratory and toxicity tested with common carp. Median lethal concentrations were determined in acute tests. The 96 h LC50 value was 100, 86 and 26 mg/L were tested. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with four replications. Screening of different herbicides was t...
